EDMOND HARTY, FOUNDER of Dairymaster, specialising in the development and manufacturing of dairy farm equipment, was named 2012 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the Gala Awards held in Dublin last night.

Dr Harty was presented with the title by President Michael D Higgins at the awards in City West hotel last night.

The entrepreneur joined his family business in 1998, exporting to over 40 countries while also retaining jobs locally in Co Kerry. The company has operations in the UK and US and employs 220 people internationally.

Dairymaster provides a range of products including milking equipment, automatic scrapers and feeders, milk cooling tanks and heat detection systems.

Harty was amongst 24 finalists from across Ireland that made it to the final stages of the 2012 programme and will now go forward to represent Ireland at the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards which will be held in Monte Carlo next June.

On Newstalk this morning Harty said that while Dairymaster is seeing success internationally, Ireland is still one of the company’s most important markets.

Commenting on the award, Frank O’Keefe of the Entrepreneur of the Year Programme said Harty is “an outstanding example of the phenomenal levels of creativity, commitment, ambition and determination that are required to effectively lead one of the most successful mechanical engineering businesses currently operating within the international arena”.
