Today we continue our countdown of Ireland’s top jobs announcement stories of 2012. It was the year companies in sectors that are thriving despite the downturn – technology, science and pharma – created jobs in their organisations, ranging from multinationals to start-ups.

Agri-food and food innovation company Kerry Group, for example, announced 900 jobs, betting giant Paddy Power proclaimed 800 new jobs, and financial services giant Northern Trust revealed it would be hiring to fill 400 positions.

The Digital Skills Academy has announced a second WebElevate programme through the Higher Education Authority’s Springboard initiative, aiming to reskill 140 job seekers for the tech sector.

WebElevate is an honours-degree level programme at the Digital Hub, with Dublin Institute of Technology as its awarding body. It aims to plug the digital skills gap while helping job seekers find work by training them in in-demand skills. It is free as part of the HEA’s Springboard initiative.

SAP to create 250 jobs in Dublin, Galway

39 - SAP to create 250 jobs in Dublin, Galway

Multinational software company SAP has confirmed it will invest €110m to expand its Irish operations, creating 250 jobs in Galway and Dublin in the process.

RTÉ reported that SAP will create 150 jobs in Citywest in Dublin for roles in sales and services.

Energy utility Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) is planning to create 100 new full-time jobs in the next 12 months in Ireland to support its energy portfolio in the country, while the company said it will also be creating 600 indirect construction jobs over the next two years during the construction phase of new energy projects.

In Dublin, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, TD, and Gregor Alexander, finance director of SSE and its lead director for Ireland, announced the new jobs.

Dublin animation firm Jam Media is to create 60 new jobs after its TV series Roy was recommissioned by the BBC. The recommissioning of the series, announced from MIP in Cannes, France, constitutes an €8.5m investment in the BAFTA-winning company.

The show filmed as a fly-on-the-wall 'mockumentary' follows Roy, an 11-year-old cartoon boy living in the real world. Roy lives in Ballyfermot with his real family and plays with his real friends. He is like any other real kid his age, only he is a cartoon.

36 - Concrete manufacturer Shay Murtagh to create 41 new jobs

Mullingar-based manufacturer of concrete engineering solutions Shay Murtagh is to create 41 new jobs, Ireland's Jobs Minister Richard Bruton, TD, announced. The company is also set to invest around €3m in new technology for the production of precast concrete tunnel segments.

Shay Murtagh Precast provides pre-cast concrete engineering solutions to the Irish and UK infrastructure sectors.
